Restoran Taiwan Noodle House in SS2

SS2 in Petaling Jaya has become some sort of default option whenever me and my colleagues feel like going somewhere far from our office for lunch. There are so many eateries in that congested area that until today we are still exploring restaurants that we have yet to try. One of them is this Restoran Taiwan Noodle House.

Walked past this restaurant many times, and most of the time it was almost packed. So one fine day I suggested to my colleagues to check it out. Their very worn out menu is pretty helpful, with both English and Chinese languages used. Most of the items not surprisingly are noodles, but they do offer some rice dishes as well.

Su opted for their Chicken Chop Noodle (RM6.00), a clear soup noodle that comes with a small plate of fried chicken. It is a plain bowl of handmade noodle with sprinkles of pickled vegetable (zha chai/ chap choi) and some slices of mushroom. Too dull and plain if you ask me, although the chicken tasted quite good.

It is not hard to find out what is this restaurant’s specialty(ies), as most patrons there we observed were eating the Pork Chop Noodle (RM6.00). When it was first served, me and my colleagues were shocked to see how unappetizing it looked. But apparently we are supposed to add the chilli paste that was given with the noodle, and stir it all up.

The noodle itself is the highlight actually. It is smooth and without any strong “kan sui mei“, and goes very well with the soy sauce and the chilli paste. The pork chop that comes with this dish is yet another plus point. Tasty and lean, the pork chop retained the strong taste despite being deep fried. I will personally give this pork chop a 7.8/10 rating.

The Szechuan Beef Noodle (RM6.00) turned out to be a slight disappointment though. While the beef given was tender and lean, with no big chunk of fats to turn you off, the soup base was disappointing. Maybe in Taiwan they have a different version of Szechuan-styled food, but I personally was expecting something more spicy. Instead, this Szechuan Noodle’s soup is more salty than spicy, and somehow the noodle was quite tasteless as well, maybe due to the a tad too diluted soup.

The Soup Dumpling (5 for RM4.00) was a delight though. Big and meaty, it is definitely a steal at RM0.80 a piece. While the taste is not exactly outstanding, it is still something I would recommend people to try.

If you don’t feel like having noodles, then maybe you would want to order one of their rice dishes, such as the Pork Chop Rice (RM5.00).

Would not mind coming back for their handmade noodles again, as it is certainly a class above the usual yellow noodle. Our first visit here was a hit and miss experience, so maybe numerous visits are needed to pinpoint the hits. And one complaint I have would be the not too generous portion of meat given with each dishes. But for the cheap pricing and comfortable setting (not air conditioned though), this place might appeals to most of you.

They also sell packaged handmade noodle as well as Heng Hua’s Soh Meen (Mee Suah). Oh by the way, have I told you I am a Heng Hua lang as well?
