Restoran Yi Kee in Taman Connaught

I am sure a lot of you out there have heard a lot about the famous Restoran Sun Ming roasted duck in Taman Connaught, Cheras. Even though my place is just 10 minutes away, I didn’t get to try it until a month ago. But this post is not about Sun Ming, but an alternative, Restoran Yi Kee, in the same neighbourhood.

There are few failed attempts to eat at Sun Ming due to various reasons. But during one of those attempts, I was pretty adamant to have roasted duck for lunch. So after a driving around the commercial area for a good 5 minutes, I spotted this old-school signboard proclaiming “Famous Hong Kong Roast Goose & Duck“.

The restaurant was quite empty, except for a couple of tables occupied. Doubts started to seep into my mind at that moment, but as I said, I was hell-bent on having roasted duck. The waitress (owner’s daughter I suspect) promptly led us to a seat and took our order. And not long after that, the food arrived on our table.

Now that I have tasted the Sun Ming‘s roasted duck itself, I can safely tell you that the roasted duck here at Restoran Yi Kee is nowhere near Sun Ming‘s. But having said that, the Yi Kee‘s is still enjoyable and slightly better than the average ones found elsewhere. The meat is tender but not soft, although the skin is not crispy enough. I do tasted some hints of spices and Chinese cooking wine if I am not mistaken. Nevertheless, I walloped them all with their home-made sweet plum sauce.

Then came the pleasant discovery, a BBQ Chicken that are cooked in the
same way as “Char Siew”. Those who loves chicken and roasted pork, like
me, will definitely loves this too. Succulent pieces of boneless chicken thigh are well complimented with the sweet BBQ sauce, simply perfect to be eaten with hot white rice I would say. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think it is easy to find this delicacy in Kuala Lumpur, or even Malaysia.

There are many more specialties that I didn’t get to check out, so there would certainly be more visits from me. I need to try their “famous” roasted goose, as well as other non-“siu mei” dishes such as Thai-styled Goose Palm Kerabu, Pig Trotters braised in Black Vinegar (Chu Kiok Chou), Sweet & Sour
Vegetables
, Pig Stomach
in Pepper Soup (Chu Tou Tong)
and Steamed Kampung Chicken (Choi Yin Kai).
